The Wyvern Bindery specialises in bespoke bindings.
Our main focus is to produce one offs and smaller runs. Anything from a simple cloth bound book to a fine binding in goatskin with gilded edges and hand tooling, we offer a tailor made service from start to finish.
Options
Hard Bindings
Choose from a traditional rounded spine or a more contemporary square backed style. Our extensive range of leather, cloth and decorative papers allows for you to create your individual book whether it be full, half or quarter bound.
A variety of lettering and finishing options are available.
Soft Bindings
Our soft binding consists of a flexible cover in a cloth of your choosing. The cover is cut flush to the text block.
Lettering is available on the spine.
Fine Bindings
For a special and bespoke binding of this kind you really need to come to the bindery and choose from our extensive range of leathers, silks and decorative papers. Every detail from hand sewn head bands to decorative finishing can be catered for.
For these particularly special books we are well equipped with knowledge and experience of both design and traditional techniques. We are very proud of the high quality work we produce.
Considerations
Paper Grain
Most manufactured paper has a grain. This causes the paper to be folded or torn more easily in one direction.
When providing pages you need to print on the appropriately grained paper. You want the grain of the paper to run parallel to the spine of the book. To determine the grain direction try gently folding the paper from edge to edge both ways. You will find more resistance against the grain.
We describe paper as "long grain" when the grain runs parallel to the longer edge and "short grain" likewise.
Section Sewn
Books sewn in sections allow them to open well and for the pages to lie flat.
The weight of the paper will determine the number of pages per section so please call us for advice before you print. We charge a little extra for section sewing but would recommend this method as it will help the book to work better.
Please provide your pages pre-folded and paginated.
Single Sheet
When we make a book with single sheets we stitch directly through the text block. To allow for this stitching you will need to add an additional 5mm to your spine margin. We suggest a light weight paper for better results.
Call for advice if you are thinking about using heavier weight papers. The option of creasing is available to assist opening.
French Fold
French fold refers to pages that are folded on the foredge. This allows you to achieve double sided pages by only printing on one side. Use as lighter weight paper as possible for the best result and make sure you allow an additional 5mm on the spine margin to accommodate for sewing.
Please provide your pages pre-folded and collated.
